Me and my Brie.

Oh my little Wugaboo, you are such a cute, funny, entertaining, helpful, sweet, fun girl! The things you've been saying lately kill me...and oh how I love your dramatic facial expressions. Thanks for being in my life my little bug. I'm sure glad to be your Mom.

P.S. Alex, is that you pulling my hair? ;0)

the Nutcracker.

I do love ballet, especially the more traditional ballet (the gracefulness, poise, elegance, beautiful costumes and classical music). But I especially wanted to go to this one because of a fond childhood memory.

One Christmas, probably around 6 or 7, my Grandma Robertson gifted me a date to see the Nutcracker at BYU. When the day arrived she picked me up and we headed over to the theatre. During the performance she pulled out a box of After Eight mints to share, it made the evening feel even more sophisticated and memorable. I felt so grown up sitting there all dressed up next to my Grandma. What a delightful occasion that I have carried with me over the years.

I was so grateful for a sweet husband who was willing to relive a night out at the ballet, thin mints and all. Thank you Grahams and Bry for two magical evenings.

**Another great Christmas date brought to us by Groupon ;0) **

Les Fêtes de Noël.

This Christmas season in St. Louis was a busy and fun one. Can you find the pictures that go along with the following descriptions?....

Brie and her friend Isaac riding in a horse drawn carriage * Homemade Christmas goodies, ready to be given away * Warming up with wassail after candelit caroling around the complex * Brie excitedly awaiting the horse and carriage to come * Making popcorn for Syliva our awesome mail lady ("thanks for popping in with packages, cards...") * Driving through a tunnel of beautiful Christmas lights at Lady of the Snows in Illinois * Trains driving amidst Christmas packages at the Garden Land Express (thanks to Sister Tripp getting us in for free!) * Brie holding our her goat "Gouda" for Alex to pet (a little souvenir for donating to the Christmas lights display) * Alex & Adam as elves :0) * trying out the chocolate dipped oreos for a Relief Society Christmas cookie exchange * Brie shaking Santa's hand *Chocolate dipped pretzels * Mini peppermint ice creams for our FHE treat while we looked at the Christmas lights * and my favorite picture...Brie's beaming smile when she got to sit on Frosty's lap :0) :0)

extending the celebrations.

Since the house was decked out for Christmas I decided to devote a festive little nook to our birthday girl. After coming down the stairs, excitedly discovering it and getting a few pictures she opened presents. (1) clothes from Once Upon a Child--She was needing some things for the winter and it's great to be able to find cute things from second hand stores (2) Elmo's Alphabet Adventure and (3) a new winter coat from Bompa and Mémé, thank you! Then, per request, Bry made Brie a crêpe breakfast with tisane and all. Later that morning Azhar came over and three of us decorated Christmas pretzels. The three of us + Alex went to the Dollar Tree to pick up a few last minute things (for a little caroling event I had planned). Azhar let Brie pick out one thing from the store for her birthday. So sweet! The rest of the day was pretty laid back. The evening was swallowed up exchanging goodies at the club house then caroling around the complex (I didn't put 2 and 2 together that the date I'd picked was Brie's birthday when I booked the clubhouse, otherwise I would have chosen another day.). Unfortunately I ended up getting really sick after caroling :0( We had planned on having ice cream over at Gublers' (while baby sitting Peter and Sam) but instead Bry single handedly took care of all four children, got them to bed and I slept the evening away. Brie was a good sport about waiting a few days to finish the celebrations. We turned a sugar cone (some ice cream, hot fudge and a few sprinkles) into a "Christmas tree", stuck a candle in it and sang her happy birthday. She loved it...and so did we, it was nice a simple :0) Through out the week birthday cards came in the mail. She was on cloud nine opening them. Thank you to each of you who helped make Brie feel so special for her birthday!!

Donald James Sheets.

Back in November (17-24) the kids and I flew out to visit my family around Thanksgiving time. A few days after we arrived my Grandpa Sheets passed away. I was really sad to have not had the chance to see him before he died, but grateful that I was able to talk to him on the phone and let him know that I love and appreciate him. And I was thankful that since we were already in Utah we were able to fly out with family to California (Bry met us in SLC and flew with us to Oakland) to be there for his funeral.

(Some of the above pictures are of Grandpa and Grandma, and others are with Kim (his dear second wife) and Kristina (our step "auntie" ;0))...who we love! We are so grateful to have them as family.

I hadn't been to California (to visit family) since my Grandma's funeral when I was 12yrs, so although it was a short trip it was a wonderful one with great reunions and reminiscing. (My Parents had planned to have us stay in a hotel, but I asked if we could stay with my Uncle Bruce and Aunt Nilda. My Grandparents lived with them while I was growing up and it was there that we would visit every summer. I have so many fun and fond childhood memories in that house.)

I was flooded with memories as I walked in the front door and got choked up as I was welcomed by Bruce & Nilda. The giant fish tank that used to house salt water fish, the front bathroom where we would hide treasures in the drawers, the big stair case, the pool, the list goes on and on. I was so grateful that Bry and the kids were there with me to soak it all up and to spend time with the Sheets side of the family.

The day of the funeral was a long one. Brie and Alex were good sports considering. Poor, exhausted Alex ended up falling asleep on the foyer couch. Brie snuck a cat nap at some point.

My family participated in some of the funeral service. Dad gave the eulogy, Matt & I sang a duet ("Be Still My Soul", Bry accompanied for us) and our whole family sang "Our Savior's Love". I think the most touching thing for me that day was seeing family and friends, from the Sheets and Chau families alike, coming together to celebrate Grandpa. It was a sweet day.

Before heading home Aunt Sheryl and Uncle Steve had us over for a surprise birthday brunch for Em.

Thanks for being our photographer
by day and police officer by night ;0)

It was so sweet of them and knowing Sheryl, the food was delicious and beautifully prepared. The chocolate chocolate cake was so y.u.m.m.y. AND it was wonderful to have one last chance to mingle with family, particularly cousins, aunts and uncles that I hadn't seen in years.

We miss you Grandpa, but are grateful to know that you're with Grandma...and in a better place. Thank you for leaving us a legacy of resourcefulness and hard work. We love you!

Finally home.

After nearly a month {and a VERY eventful Christmas vacation} we finally got home at midnight last night....and you better believe there are LOTS of pending posts. Grandpa Sheets' funeral, Brie's birthday, Christmas festivities, and our vacation in Utah. Stay tuned, once we've gotten unpacked and settled back into our routines I'm hoping to whip out the posts :0)

Brie is 3!

Brie is three! During her birthday breakfast Bry and I took turns telling things that we love about Brie. Some of them included Brie being fun, happy, having lots of personality, making funny faces, being sweet with Alex, and being so great to help Mama.

Aside from the things listed on the picture, Brie loves changing her outfit and "matching" different articles of clothing. If she had it her way she would only wear skirts and dresses... with leggings or tights :0)

She loves her little brother and really has done a great job sharing her toys, her things, her parents ;0) She loves to tickle him, blow on his tummy and make him laugh.

One of her favorite things is being my helper...she loves to do what I'm doing! Usually I try to run with that. It's generally so cute to have her little energetic self as my side kick.

Although she is such a girly girl, she hates to have her hair done and runs around and plays with the boys wit the best of them. I kind of think she's going to be our girly tom boy and I love it!

Brie is becoming so capable and wants so much to be independent and to do things on her own, in her own way…especially if it’s NOT what Mom and Dad want :0) But what 3 year old is not going through that? Little by little we’re getting the hang of things and I really am finding much more joy in motherhood. There is joy to be had, I just need to recognize it and embrace it.

Brie you are a sweet, fun-loving, creative, cute girl and we sure love you! Happy Birthday!!

Tis the Season...

...to be sick!

It seems like we pick up one bug and just as we're getting over it we pick up another. What fun ;0) Do any of you seem to be having the same problem this season? After a friend mentioned how inundated we are during the holidays with sweets*, feeling some stress from all of the scheduled activities, AND staying up late to get things done...it dawned on me, no wonder we are more likely to get sick at this time of year. We eat junk, we tend to be overly scheduled, are extra stressed and don't get enough sleep! That's not to say that I'm not enjoying the Christmas season (because I am!) and that I don't enjoy getting yummy Christmas goodies from sweet friends and thoughtful neighbors (because I do!), but I think I would enjoy the season more if I took better care of myself. One of my goals this year is to use moderation when it comes to eating. I think it's OK to have a sugar cookie or some fudge, just not 10 cookies or half the pan of fudge :0)

In any case, I hope you are all enjoying this wonderful time of year...and hopefully not getting too many bugs!

*Bry & I have started brainstorming healthier holiday "treats" to give away. So far we've thought of freezer jam, wassail, clementines and dried fruit. Do you have fun ideas up that lane? I'd love to hear them if you do!

Clustered Together.

Keeping with tradition, we each mentioned something we were grateful for with each Christmas ornament we hung on our little tree. My heart melted as Brie's first 4 or 5 things all involved Alex. i.e. I'm thankful for my baby brother, I'm thankful for making Alex laugh...Oh how I love those two.

The following day I looked over at our tree and noticed a whole cluster of ornaments. Brie had apparently been rearranging and had squeezed nearly 20 bulbs on one tiny branch. My "OCD" tendency was to move them all back, but NO WAY, not this time. I love looking at that cluster and thinking of my cute, creative, curious little Brie :0)

One word...

H.a.n.d.s.o.m.e.

Earning my Title.

Other than the last few days (Alex has been a little sick and is teething so he hasn't had his usual appetite), I definitely feel like I've been earning my title of Mom.

M.O.M. = Maker Of Milk

This little guy is a guzzler. He has been eating purées at meal times, is nursing just as much if not more, and is still up 1 to 2 times a night to nurse. Maybe it's a growth spurt?

In any case I'm trying to savor these moments with him. My favorite is to sit up on my bed, snuggle up with my fleece blanket and hold him close while he's calm, still and quietly nursing....I know that these days will be gone before I know it.

Gone and Done it.

When Bry mentioned Brie's hair getting straggly I knew it was time to finally cut it. I've been trimming her bangs periodically for the last year and a half, but haven't had the heart to trim the rest of her hair. I have to admit I was a sad to see several inches of her hair go. Oh well, life definitely goes on, and let's be honest...she doesn't care! She was happy to get a hair cut :0)

Bring on the snow!

Watching the garbage truck. Still a favorite :0)

Brie = personality :0)

After getting back from our trip (more details on that later) Brie wanted to try out her new winter gear from Bompa & Mémé (vest, mittens and boots). Even though it doesn't look particularly cold in these pictures, it was! Brie stood out there a few minutes, long enough to watch the garbage truck come and go, and raced back in to get warm. I think her choice of tights and skirt didn't quite cut the windy day. In any case it was cute to see her outfitted for the snow, and I can't get enough of her raccoon tuque. Love it.

Such a Warm Welcome.

On Thanksgiving morning we left my Parents' place in Provo and by afternoon we were back home in St. Louis, carrying in luggage, taking quick showers and heading over to Ashley's Mom's house for dinner. We were so grateful for them warmly welcoming us into their home, sharing a beautiful and delicious Thanksgiving meal, graciously entertaining our kiddos, and then generously sending us home with left overs. How thoughtful and sweet of them. We had such a pleasant evening, thank you!

I almost forgot to include some things I'm thankful for! Counting my blessings always does my spirit some good, so before I finish this post, here go a few...
my health
my dear Bry and sweet kiddos
a warm place to live
the gospel that guides my life...
...and a Savior who helps to turn my wrongs into rights
family
transportation
technology (to so easily keep in touch with friends & family)
good food
the spirit
the chance to change
the beauties of the Earth
friends
Brie's giggle
my camera :0)
music
Apostles and Prophets on the Earth today
bright colors
my senses
Alex's smile
the team that Bry & I make

**Two side notes: their turkey was SO big that it broke the oven rack. Now that's big! I love the center right picture of Alex, that sweet grin on his face. What a cutie. **

Is it safe?

I recently read that if you want to check toys to see if they're safe for babies to play with, you grab an empty toilet paper roll and see if the toy can slide through. If it can, it's a no go.

The other day I had Brie be my "tester"...after about 10 minutes we had a whole basketful of "toys for Alex". Plus she now has a better idea of what things she needs to keep off the floor AND she doesn't seem quite as possessive with her toys. Win-win.

Lavendar.

For those of you who recall this post about our dear friends, Ben & Ashley...they've been chosen to adopt a little girl next month. We could not be happier for them! :0)

Last month Ashley's Mom threw the most adorable lavendar butterfly baby shower, ever! (I of course said yes when Ashley asked if I could take a few pictures of some of the details.) It was fun documenting such a delightful event, but even more fun to be there to celebrate with Ashley... to see her on the receiving end of the excitement, anticipation and gratitude that surrounds the birth of a baby. What a joyous occasion!

We were there, kinda.

During a recent conversation with my Grandma my Mom was asking her about funeral details. (Unfortunately, my Teddy Graham's health has been going down hill lately and we're not sure how much longer she'll be with us.) Grahams mentioned that she would LOVE to have Jenny Oaks Baker play at her funeral. My Mom basically replied that it probably wouldn't be possible. When later mentioning the conversation to my Dad he proposed having her play for Grandma while she was still alive instead of at her funeral. Rach got in touch with Jenny over email and it turned out that she was visiting Utah for a few days and was happy to squeeze in a mini performance. So a few weeks ago (10 Nov 2011), some of my family congregated at my Parents' home, Brie and I joined in through Skype, and Jenny came to play for Grahams. We were so touched by her willingness to come. The sound quality through Skype wasn't stellar, but everyone who had been there said that her performance was amazing! What a special dream come true for Grahams!

For the Beauty of the Earth.

5 November 2011

For whatever reason I was having a frazzling day...Bry volunteered to take Brie for a "daddy-daughter date" so I could get some things done and have a few minutes to myself. (That dear Bry.) After about twenty minutes Bry texted, telling me that I should come outside. There was Brie smiling under a layer of leaves. She popped up, brushed off the leaves and started running up and down the side walk in front of our house. Then she got her daddy in on the fun. (Somewhere in there we were all looking for especially brilliant-colored leaves. I LOVE fall leaves. Breath-taking really.) Before we knew it another resident at our complex came by, strolling her cute little dog, Lady. Brie excitedly pet her and tried to feed her leaves ;0) I was snapping pictures all the while. It turned out to be a delightful and beautiful autumn afternoon.
