Dust.

For those who have asked, here is the text from my lesson to the Young Women a few weeks ago.  And so that you don't wonder,  {P} = Participation from the girls (having them read a passage, asking them a question, etc.)

{P} Ask someone to read the following…
"A group of youth in Queen Creek, Arizona, determined to “arise and shine forth” and to lead the youth in their community in living the standards inFor the Strength of Youth. They each wrote something that they felt was holding them back or something they wanted to change in their lives in their journals, and then they literally dug a hole. They came together, tore out the journal page, and threw it into the hole in the earth, just like the people of Ammon did in the Book of Mormon with their weapons of war. 12Then they buried those pages, and that day they each made a commitment to change. They repented. They determined to arise!
Do you have something in your life that you need to change? You can do this. You can repent because of the Savior’s infinite atoning sacrifice. He made it possible for you and me to change, to become pure and clean again, and to become like Him. And He has promised that when we do, He will remember our sins and mistakes no more. 13

Several weeks ago I stood in the celestial room of the Reno Nevada Temple. The light streaming into that room was brilliant and was made even more so by the crystal chandelier, which reflected the light on its many carved facets into rainbows of illumination everywhere. It took my breath away as I realized that the Savior is “the light and the life of the world,” 16 that it is His light we must hold up and reflect. We are the tiny crystals that reflect His light, and in order to do that, we must be clean and free from the dust of the world."  ELAINE S. DALTON YOUNG WOMEN GENERAL PRESIDENT

{P?} Does anything come to mind when Sister Dalton was talking about repentance, change and giving up things that hold us back?  When she used the word dust I thought of something that gradually accumulates over time.  Little by little.  If we think about this in terms of repentance the “dust” can be little and seemingly harmless choices that add up and weigh you down.

{P} 50 lb back pack—Need a volunteer to come carry this.  What do you think?  How does it feel?  Can you run across the room?
I want to tell you about some choices that added up and that I carried around for a long time.
Turning to food instead of turning to the Lord, disregarded when full, kept eating, wasn’t exercising.  Little by little I gained more and more.  Years of overeating and neglect led to being obese.

**This isn’t a lesson about weight loss, being physically fit or even health.   It’s about the choices we make each day and the way that they add up.   It’s a lesson about the opportunity that Christ gives each of us to change.  It’s about God taking us where we’re at and helping us make changes even when they seem impossible to make. **

I want to share a few things that I recently posted on my blog.  As I read it I want you to think of how it applies to our spiritual fitness and health.

"Over the last few months I have often thought of the weight I have lost and can't believe the burden I was carrying around. {at this point} it's almost 50 lbs. Just think of hauling a 50 lb. back pack around. Imagine even carrying around a 25 lb pack. That's a ton of weight and it takes its toll
As I've gone along I have really become a firm believer that "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass." (Alma 37:6) I realized that my often black and white thinking was wrong. I could no longer see my health in two extremes: overweight or ideal. I had to realize that there was a spectrum of progress and that each step in the right direction was a victory....AND that each step in that direction would ultimately lead me to my goal. It's also been a beautiful testimony to me of repentance. That even though we may mean no harm by the choices we make, that ultimately we are accountable for them. And that it does mean turning from those choices and one step at a time walking away from them. It takes time, BUT it is possible and it is liberating!.celebrate all the victories! One pound is not insignificant (pick up a pound of butter and realize that there is that much less of you to have to carry around ;0)), especially when it's half of the allotted weight your supposed to safely lose a week! It's great...it's exciting! By small and simple things do great things come to pass. By small yet significant choices we turn from our old ways and find better ways of doing things."

Let’s open our scriptures to a well-known analogy.  As we read this I want you to be thinking of this idea that by small and simple things (choices, steps) do great things come to pass.  And remember that progress is NOT black or white…progress is a process.
{P} Read Tree of Life (1 nephi 8)

And it came to pass that I saw a aman, and he was dressed in a white brobe; and he came and stood before me.
And it came to pass that he spake unto me, and bade me follow him.
And it came to pass that as I followed him I beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.
And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would haveamercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.
And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious afield.
10 And it came to pass that I beheld a atree, whose bfruit was desirable to make one chappy.
11 And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the afruitthereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the bwhiteness that I had ever seen.
12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great ajoy; wherefore, I began to be bdesirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was cdesirableabove all other fruit.

I don’t know about you but I’ve read about Lehi’s dream dozens of times.  Once time I read it while on my mission and something stood out to me.

{P} Notice that Lehi is first in darkness…and traveled in darkness for many hours.  What does he do next?  (see verse 8)  He prays.  What happens next? (see verses 9 and 10)  He sees a large field and sees a tree. What really stood out to me is that Lehi wasn’t instantly at the tree.  Even after praying he sees it off in the distance.  So it is with our spiritual journeys.  We may feel at times surrounded with darkness, weighed down by poor decisions, neglect, laziness, procrastination, bad habits, negative thoughts…but with the Lord’s help and mercy He can lead us away from those things AND bring us into the light and help us feel of His love.
With that passage of scripture still in mind I want to read to you a journal entry I wrote last August.  It was key paradigm shift I had that help me to feel capable of changing...
"         I realized that one of my stumbling blocks for losing weight has been seeing things as black and white.  I'm either...
overweight (black) OR ideal weight (white).

Anything in between is not good enough.  It's definitely a debilitating mentality because it doesn't allow you room to change.  Anyway something inside of me switched and helped me see weight loss differently.  Losing 1 lb. is a success, as is 2...5...10...50...60!  They are all valuable and worth celebrating.  I can transfer that mentality to repentance, parenthood, etc.  I don't need to say, either I'm...

monster mom (black) OR perfect mom (white)

I         I can see where I'm at and move forward from there.  What is a more realistic step forward?"

{P?} I want each of us to ask our self this question, “which area in my life could I use some progress and growth?  What is the NEXT step in the right direction?”

*Don’t forget to pray, pray from the heart.  (Alma 37:36-37)  The Lord takes us from where we’re at.  We may feel completely helpless, that’s OK, tell Him, talk to Him…He can help!
·
·         Heber J. Grant overcame many of his weaknesses and turned them into talents. He had as his motto these words: “That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do; not that the nature of the thing is changed, but that our power to do is increased”

We CAN turn from our old ways of doing things and change one step, one choice at a time.  Change is possible through Christ.  All things are possible through Christ!  Philipians 4:13 I can do all things through aChrist which bstrengtheneth me.

King of the Jungle.

On Saturday (26 May 2012), Cynthia, Laura, Jenna and Marie helped to throw a shower for our friend, Amanda.  I asked if I could host it because I prefer decorating to making food and decided to do a jungle theme.  I love the bright colors and cute animals that accompany it.  Plus, Alex's baby corner was jungle theme so it made for easy setup.  I just had to make a few jungle banners, paper vines, a "diaper" cake, a few pom poms and we were set.

Quite a few of Amanda's family members were able to come.  It was fun to mix and mingle and get to know them better, and to see everyone who came to celebrate Amanda...the great mom that she is, and to shower her with presents for her little Liam.  Now's the waiting game...when is his birthday going to be?! :0)

We played a few games:
1) getting to know Amanda
2) rice + safety pins
3) guzzling {apple juice} from a bottle

*The jeans and white shirt (not the best shot though because
it's the pleats on the front that make the shirt) are from the "Outlet."

Who played?

Last week Bry & I decided to have a two part "Baseball" date:

Friday 18 May 2012-- had a picnic in the front room (with the kiddos) while watching part of a baseball game online.  After the kids went down we made homemade Cracker Jacks (totally burnt) and played catch.

Wednesday 23 May 2012-- got cheap Cardinals tickets and rode the metro to the game.  I honestly couldn't tell you who they played...I was wrapped up in the whole experience, being in the Busch Stadium for the first time surrounded by thousands of Cardinals fans (LOVED all the red and team spirit, didn't love the overabundance of  leg and cleavage showing.  I felt like a nun in my t-shirt and capris.  Oh dear.).  The weather was gorgeous!  Our second try at Cracker Jacks was so delish.  I loved all the photographic opportunities and  appreciated Bry helping me to switch out my lenses.  And I so enjoyed an evening out with my sweetie. (Thanks for watching the kiddos, Martha & Taylor!)  GO CARDS! :0)

Treasure hunting again.

Us and our lovely latex gloves.

Last week Taylor listened for Nelli, Marlee, Brie and Alex while they napped AND THEN took care of all 4 of them so us girls could hit up the good ol' "outlet" again.  THANK YOU, Taylor :0)

Meghann, Martha, Kari-Lynn (she met us there...wish we had gotten a picture of us all) and I worked through each bin, holding up our crazy finds (you know you wanted those tights Meghann ;0)), and scoping out clothes for each other and our kids.  Fun times :0)

Bry: 1 sweater, 1 shirt
Me: 4 cardigans, 2 pants, 5 shirts, 1 sweatshirt, 1 sweater
Brie: 3 skirts, 2 dresses, 1 pair of shorts, 2 capris, 2 pants
Alex: 2 shirts, 1 jacket, 1 pair of swim shorts, 3 pjs, 3 pants

Grand total: $11.37

Some of the more notable brands from this round were Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Circo, JJill, Children's Place.  Sure they're not in perfect condition, but not too shabby for a fraction of the cost.  Although I do have to say that you win some and lose some.  I had hoped to find a swim suit cover up...no luck, BUT did check off the Cardinal's tshirt that was on my list (thanks to Martha!).  Not everything will work for now, especially with the heat of Summer hitting, but they'll work this Fall or next time I'm needing some maternity wear.  It's been really nice to update my wardrobe (especially since I haven't been this size for 5 years!) without breaking the bank.  Now, I'm hoping to start piecing my wardrobe together...like this blogger.  I love how she comes up with so many different combinations with the same items.

Here are some of my favorite finds for Brie...

Some won't fit for a year or so, but thought I'd get them to hang to.  Such cute finds.

Scrapbook meets Recipe.

(23 May 2012)
This week Martha and I decided to make recipe binders to organize
our recipe collections in a fun, colorful and creative way.

A quick trip to Walmart, a few fun supplies, several hours later and voilà...our binders!  It'll be so nice to have my recipes organized and was such a fun project to work on with Martha. {She found some really cute ideas on Pinterest that we were able to incorporate.}  Have I mentioned that she's moving?  We're sure going to miss them as neighbors and friends.

Scrapbook + Recipes = Sarah's binder ;0)

What would one of my projects be
without pictures? ;0)  I had to add a few.

I decided to color coordinate the pages with their subcategories. (all the chicken dishes have a color, beef/pork/seafood have another...)  Hopefully it will make for easy retrieval and returning of the recipes.

D is for Desert.

Occasionally over the last several months Brie has taken part in an unofficial preschool.  We rotate with 3 other families in our ward, and take turns "teaching" the kids while the other moms have 2 hours sans toddler.  This week the schedule stars aligned and I finally had a chance to take a turn.  I did the letter D and centered things around the Desert.  We were Detectives and Dug in sand for treasures (Duck, Donut, Dime, Dish, etc.) and traced our findings. Camille the Camel read us a few books about the Desert and taught us the "Alice the Camel" song.  We tasted some Dried fruit and had a Drink of water (while talking about an oasis).  We played tupperware Drums (did our own "thunderstorm" while reading about storms on the desert), Danced to Disney music, and did some Drawings.  I think the kids were still warming up to me by the end (since it was most of their first times at our house), but I had a great time :0)  I was reminded of what a kinesthetic learner I am...and couldn't help but think of some of my favorite preschool memories: Dancing, an Easter egg hunt, giant balloons, the tire swing, playing in pudding.  I'm glad Brie's been able to take part in such a laid back and fun "preschool."

Coldstone Competition.

(19 May 2012)

Visiting Teaching + Farewell to the Southwicks =
Coldstone Competition with the "Crêpe Crew"

 These were the 7 "offering bowls" ready to be judged.  We all came up with some pretty interesting flavors. {I thought that mine was going to be good, but it totally flopped and ended up being my least favorite.}

Julie took first with her fruit and toasted coconut...and won a gift bag that our cute neighbor (Ruth Anne) had donated to the cause.  Julie let each of us pick something to keep.  Prizes all around :0)  What a fun evening!

it was time.

Alex's hair was a bit out of control...short in the front and uber long in the back.  It was time for a little cut.  {Funny that Alex's first hair cut was so much sooner than Brie's}  He was one tricky booger to work with... definitely a little moving target.  Here's the finished result.  That handsome little man :0)

the last dance class.

Last Monday was Brie's final dance lesson.  Here she is before heading out to class with Alex & Bry.  Isn't she a cutie? :0)  I stayed home because I had some crazy spell with vertigo* earlier that morning and didn't feel up to getting out.   I was bummed to find that out after the fact that it was the last class (I have kind of been a space cadet with her dance class in general and couldn't remember when it was supposed to end.) but am glad I at least got some pictures of her all dressed up.

Ironically her favorite part of it all was playing at the adjoining playground afterwards.  Go figure.  Maybe in a year or two she'll be more interested...or we'll figure out something else that will pique her interest even more.  In any case, thank you Bompa & Mémé for the lessons!

*I woke up extremely dizzy with the room spinning.  Talk about instant and intense nausea. {no, i'm not pregnant.}  I threw up then ended up going back to bed for 5 hours til lunch. NO FUN!  Thankfully I already had babysitters lined up to help with the kids (I was supposed to go to jury duty.  I got it postponed.) and Bry was great to pick up the slack. It was so weird.

Mother's Day 2012.

Sunday, 12 May 2012.

(My Mom & Dad sent me the outfit that I'm wearing for Mother's Day...SO sweet!  And Brie's currently our little sheep dog ;0)  She's growing out her bangs.  After seeing these pictures I realized that we need to start pinning them back.)

Mother's Day this year entailed...

Bry getting up with the kids so I could sleep and making me overnight baked french toast for breakfast * a note from Brie (written by her Dad ;0)) * cards from my Mom & Dad AND a handmade card from Matt and Tim * Bry & I singing Mother's Day primary songs at the piano * gorgeous weather * walking to and from church together * nice church meetings---Brie going up to the front to sing with the other primary kids AND dove candy bars for all the women over 18! * skyping with both sides of the family * Bry making me homemade poutine, salad and apple dumplings for dinner and dessert * going on a little after dinner stroll * visiting with our neighbors Ed & Ruth Anne * a beautiful necklace and earrings set from Ruth Anne * a very sweet card from Bry*

It was a wonderful day, especially thanks to Bry!  I sure am grateful to be a Mom to these cute kidoodles and to have Bry as my partner in crime.  Sure love them all :0)

First official 5k.

(12 May 2012)
As one of my fitness goals I wanted to participate in a 5k for a cause.  Awhile back, thanks to a suggestion from a sister in our ward, we signed up for the Jim Schoemel 5k run.  Bry, Brie and I each got a t-shirt and number...and sweet, patient Alex was along for the ride.  (Well, so was Brie ;0))  We walked most of it (jogged down the hills), but kept a pretty good pace, especially considering the stops to keep the kids stocked on breakfast and for dropped sippy cups.  It was a beautiful morning, perfect overcast weather, the Webster Groves neighborhoods were lovely, but it was especially neat to do as a family.  It will definitely be the first of many walks for a cause.

This particular race is for ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's disease.  This year was specifically supporting Gina Byrd and her family.  Shortly after her husband's cancer was in remission she was diagnosed with ALS.  Not to mention that their son is autistic.  I was so glad that we could do our little part to help support them. If you want to find out about it...here is the info that the website offered.  (Or you can click here.)

It was neat to be part of something larger than ourselves.  The women ahead of us were from the elementary school where the Byrd's son attends.  They were there to support his family.  I love the power that comes from individuals coming together for good.

The Byrd family was waiting at the end of the race to cheer us all on and thank us for being there.  It was really touching to see them as we rounded the corner to finish mile 3.  I went back after to get their picture and got so emotional.  Mrs. Byrd was so sweet and took my hand and said, "I love you, I love you so much."  She could have been thinking, "who is this stranger who is all choked up?" but she was so gracious and kind.

On the way home Brie serenaded us with primary songs, "I came to Earth with the power to choose..."  Sweet moments.  Sure love time spent with our little family.

Rocket Ship Park.

(5 May 2012)
A few weekends ago we decided to do an "earlier" morning outing (7:30) to the Rocket Ship Park.  Bry made breakfast burritos and oatmeal (for our little man), and after a stop by the potty and diaper change we were off.  The weather was perfect...the company was even MORE perfect ;0), and we had SO much fun at the park.  Love those family outings!  If you haven't checked out this park, you should.

Brie & Bry after breakfast.

One step for man one giant leap for mankind ;0)
Love those sweet chubby wobbly legs doing their thing.

Swinging time...
Oh the memories that this brought back...
swinging at Canyon Crest Elementary back in the day :0)

(Brie in midair--dashing over to see her Dad come down the slide :0))

Bry enjoyed digging in the gravel more than the kids, cute to see him having fun too.
